1. Introduction to Kedarnath

  • Location: Kedarnath is one of the Char Dham pilgrimage sites, located in the Indian state of Uttarakhand, in the Garhwal Himalayas. It is situated at an altitude of 3,583 meters above sea level, near the Mandakini River.

  • Significance: Kedarnath is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, making it a key pilgrimage site for Hindus.

2. Best Time to Visit

  • Opening and Closing Dates: The Kedarnath Temple opens in May (Akshay Tritiya) and closes in November (Kartik Purnima). The exact dates may vary based on the Hindu lunar calendar.

  • Best Season: The best time to visit is between May and October, avoiding the harsh winter months and the monsoon season when the area can be prone to landslides.

3. Kedarnath Yatra Itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrival at Haridwar or Rishikesh

    • Travel from Haridwar or Rishikesh to Gaurikund (the base for the Kedarnath trek). This can be done by road or helicopter.

  • Day 2: Gaurikund to Kedarnath Trek

    • Trek Distance: Approximately 16 km (one way) from Gaurikund to Kedarnath.

    • The trek is uphill and can be physically challenging, but ponies, palkis, and porters are available for assistance.

    • Alternatively, a helicopter service is available for those who prefer a quicker and less strenuous journey.

  • Day 3: Kedarnath Temple Visit

    • Visit the Kedarnath Temple early in the morning to avoid the crowds.

    • Temple Timings: The temple is open for darshan from 5 AM to 12 PM, and the evening aarti is held from 6 PM to 7 PM.

    • After darshan, spend some time exploring the surroundings, including the Samadhi of Adi Shankaracharya, located near the temple.

  • Day 4: Return Journey

    • Trek back to Gaurikund or take a helicopter ride, and then return to Haridwar or Rishikesh by road.

4. Important Stops Along the Yatra

  • Gaurikund: The base of the Kedarnath trek. It has hot water springs and is dedicated to Goddess Gauri.

  • Rudra point: A significant stop during the trek offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains.

  • Bhairon Temple: Located a little higher up, it is said that one must visit this temple after Kedarnath darshan to complete the yatra.

5. How to Reach Kedarnath

  • By Air: The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun. From there, you can take a taxi to reach Haridwar or Rishikesh, then proceed to Gaurikund.

  • By Train: The nearest railway station is in Haridwar. You can take a train to Haridwar and then proceed by road to Gaurikund.

  • By Road: Buses and taxis are available from Haridwar and Rishikesh to Gaurikund, the starting point of the trek.

6. Accommodation

  • Gaurikund: Basic guesthouses, dharamshalas, and tents are available.

  • Kedarnath: Basic accommodations like camps and guesthouses are available near the temple. It’s recommended to book accommodation in advance during peak season.

7. Things to Keep in Mind

  • Physical Fitness: The trek can be challenging due to the high altitude and difficult terrain. It is advisable to be physically prepared.

  • Weather Conditions: The weather can change abruptly, so pack warm clothes, rain gear, and comfortable trekking shoes.

  • Altitude Sickness: Due to the high altitude, it is essential to stay hydrated and take rest breaks during the trek.

  • Travel Insurance: It is advisable to have travel insurance that covers evacuation and medical emergencies.

8. Other Nearby Attractions

  • Chopta: Known as "Mini Switzerland," this is a popular place for trekking and nature lovers, located about 40 km from Kedarnath.

  • Sonprayag: A scenic stop located on the way to Kedarnath, known for its natural beauty.
