Govardhan Parikrama: Walking in Krishna’s Footsteps

The Hill That Krishna Lifted – Govardhan’s Eternal Glory

Nestled in the heart of Braj, Govardhan Hill is not just a mound of earth—it is a living deity. Revered as non-different from Lord Krishna Himself, this sacred hill has been worshipped for thousands of years as the divine protector of Vrindavan.

The most memorable pastime? When Lord Krishna lifted Govardhan Hill on His little finger to shelter the Vrajavasis from the wrath of Indra. This act, filled with divine power and compassion, is celebrated as Govardhan Puja, observed the day after Diwali.

But Govardhan’s glory isn’t confined to that one event. Every stone, tree, and dust particle here holds the imprint of Krishna’s playful footsteps.

Govardhan Parikrama – A Journey of Devotion

Performing parikrama (circumambulation) of Govardhan Hill is considered one of the most spiritually rewarding acts in Vaishnava tradition. The 21-kilometre walk symbolizes complete surrender to Krishna, and devotees take it as a vow of love and humility.

The Govardhan Parikrama path passes through forests, kunds (sacred ponds), temples, and untouched villages. Many perform it barefoot, chanting the holy names, singing bhajans, or silently praying.

Key Stops on the Parikrama Path

Here are some of the most spiritually significant spots during the Govardhan Parikrama:

1. Govinda Kund

Where Lord Krishna bathed after lifting Govardhan Hill. This sacred spot holds a special place in the hearts of devotees, as it marks a moment of Krishna’s immense power and compassion.

2. Radha Kund and Shyam Kund

The most sacred kunds in Vrindavan, created by Radha and Krishna. Bathing here during Kartik is believed to grant prema-bhakti (divine love for Krishna) and purify the heart.

3. Kusum Sarovar

The serene pond where Radharani and the gopis would gather flowers for Krishna. This tranquil spot is ideal for japa (chanting) and meditation, immersing one deeply in devotion.

4. Haridev Temple

An ancient temple dedicated to Lord Krishna, built by King Vajranabh, Krishna’s great-grandson. The temple is a testament to Vrindavan’s rich spiritual heritage and Krishna's eternal presence.

5. Poonchari Ka Lautha

The hill’s tail-end, where Krishna paused to look back, awaiting Radharani and the gopis during a playful moment. This site symbolizes divine longing and love.

6. Daan Ghati

A famous spot where Krishna would collect “taxes” from the gopis in a playful mood. The gopis, despite their love for Krishna, would joke with Him, offering their most treasured possessions in return.

7. Manasi Ganga

This sacred pond was created by Krishna’s divine will and is said to have appeared in Krishna’s mind. Manasi Ganga is symbolic of divine purity and the spiritual link between the material and the transcendental world. It is said that Krishna created this pond for His devotees, and taking a dip here brings immense blessings and cleanses the soul.

Why Parikrama During Kartik is So Powerful

The month of Kartik is known as the Month of Mercy, and performing Govardhan Parikrama during this time carries thousands of times more benefit than any other period.

Scriptures say that even touching Govardhan dust, offering a lamp, or chanting Krishna’s names near the hill during Kartik burns sins of many lifetimes and invokes Krishna’s eternal mercy.
