The Glorious 84 Kos Vraja Mandala Parikrama: Walking Through Krishna’s Eternal Abode

Introduction: Why Vraja Mandala is the Soul of Devotion

In the heart of India lies a sacred geography unlike any other—a place not just of myth but of living spiritual energy. Vraja Mandala, the divine land where Lord Krishna performed His enchanting pastimes, is no ordinary pilgrimage site. It’s a manifestation of Goloka Vrindavana itself, where every stone, tree, and pond is infused with transcendental sweetness.

In 2025, during the most spiritually potent time of the year, Hare Krishna Movement Ahmedabad invites you to walk the 84 Kos Parikrama of Vraja Mandala, a soul-stirring spiritual experience covering over 80 Krishna Lila sites and 12 sacred forests.

Date: 10 November 2025

Time: 4:30 PM

Seats: 40 only – Limited slots available

What Is Vraja Mandala?

The term “Vraja” means “all-pervading” and refers to the spiritual realm of Krishna. “Mandala” means circle or region. So Vraja Mandala is the divine circle of Krishna’s pastimes. Though it appears to be part of this material world, the scriptures assure us that it is indestructible, effulgent, and eternally spiritual.

According to the Vishnu Purana, when Krishna descends to earth, He brings His abode with Him. Thus, Vraja Mandala is non-different from Goloka Vrindavana, Krishna’s eternal home.

Extent of the Divine Land – 84 Kos (Approximately 1453 sq mi)

The 84 Kos Vraja Mandala encompasses a vast area around Mathura, stretching from Agra in the south to Banchari in the north. Despite its vast expanse, the soul of Vraja beats in every corner of this divine terrain.

While cosmic creations and destructions occur, Vraja Mandala remains untouched—eternally vibrant and transcendental.

Divisions of Vraja Mandala

The region is divided into four mystical types of forests:

12 Principal Forests

            •          Eastern side of Yamuna: Madhuvana, Talavana, Kumudavana, Kamyavana, Bahulavana, Vrindavana, Khadiravana

            •          Western side of Yamuna: Mahavana, Bhandiravana, Lohavana, Bhadravana, Baelvana

These forests are sanctified by Krishna’s divine plays—from childhood mischiefs to youthful sports.

Upavanas (Sub-forests)

As mentioned in the Padma Purana:

            •          Brahmavana, Apsaravana, Kadambavana, Svarnavana, Surabhivana, Premavana, Mayuravana

Prativanas (Counter-forests)

Cited in Bhavishya Purana:

            •          Rankavana, Varttavana, Karahavana, Kamavana, Karnavana, Krishnakshipanavana, Indravana, Chandravalivana

Adhivanas (Peripheral Forests/Special Areas)

From the Vishnu Purana:

            •          Mathura, Radha-kunda, Nandagaon, Gokula, Govardhana, Sanketvana

Each van (forest) has its own mood (bhava) and pastime (leela) connected to Krishna’s divine life.

The Spiritual Geography of Krishna’s Body

The sages describe Vraja Mandala as Krishna’s transcendental form:

            •          Vrindavana – His Head

            •          Kumudavana & Talavana – His Chest

            •          Bahulavana & Mahavana – His Arms

            •          Nandagaon – His Fingers

            •          Bhandiravana – His Lotus Feet

Walking this land is literally like embracing Krishna with every step.

Scriptural Evidence & Historical Restoration

The great king Vajranabha, Krishna’s great-grandson, mapped out Vraja Mandala. He identified the spots where Krishna’s leelas took place and established Deities, temples, and kunds (sacred ponds). Many of the temples visited during the parikrama trace back to these installations.

Even the Adi-varaha Purana states that circumambulating Vraja Mandala gives hundreds of times more benefit than visiting all holy places in the world.

The Mathura Mahatmya says:

“Just hearing about the glories of Vraja Mandala can deliver 200 generations of one’s family.”
